The Voice Spain Kicks Off the Battles with Vanesa Martín as the Fifth Coach and a New Red Card

October 31, 2026

The Voice changes its rules starting this Friday, October 30. After six nights of Blind Auditions, the Antena 3 talent show enters the Battles phase at 10:00 PM with full teams, the return of steals, and two novelties that shift the coaches’ decision margin: Vanesa Martín joins as the fifth coach and a red card with a lifeline function appears.

Melendi, Lola Indigo, Mika and Pablo López will have to face their own talents in direct duels. The decision will no longer consist solely of choosing who advances: it will also require deciding whom to protect, whom to try to snatch from another team, and whom to leave with a last chance in Vanesa Martín’s hands.

Vanesa Martín will have eight chances to rescue contestants

The singer, known for her prior involvement with The Voice Kids, joins the format during the two episodes that will comprise this phase. Her role won’t be that of a temporary advisor, but that of a coach with real power to alter the path of eliminated contestants.

In each episode she will be able to rescue one contestant from each team. In total, the mechanic contemplates eight rescues: two per team across the two Battle episodes. This makes Martín a decisive figure for participants who are not chosen by their coach after singing.

The novelty introduces a second survival route within a phase traditionally marked by direct eliminations. A contestant may lose their duel, fall outside their team’s plans, and yet still keep options to stay in the show if they persuade the fifth coach.

What changes with The Voice’s red card

The show also introduces a red card that does not function as a punishment. In this edition, the pass acts as an absolute protection: the coach who uses it on one of their contestants will send them directly to the Live Shows.

The decision will carry an obvious strategic cost. Each mentor must assess whether to use their protection during the Battles or wait for a later performance they deem even more decisive. The resource is not used to save a contestant after the duel, but to shield them before the phase’s result risks their continuity.

The card adds pressure to a dynamic that already compels coaches to choose between voices within their own team. It also changes the value of a performance: contestants are not only competing to win their duel, but to become the choice that their mentor regards as important enough to spend one of their most powerful tools.

Steals, duels and a shorter route to the Live Shows

The Battles bring back duels between artists from the same team. After each performance, the coaches will decide who advances and who leaves the competition, with the possibility that other mentors try to steal some of the eliminated contestants.

The combination of steals, rescues and the red card means elimination is no longer necessarily the immediate end for all contestants. However, spots remain limited: only 18 contestants will move on to the next stage, compared with 56 who passed Blind Auditions.

That jump explains the importance of this phase. The teams arrive complete, but they cannot keep all their members. The show shifts from building the formations to pruning them, and each performance begins to have more concrete consequences for the distribution of voices that will reach the Live Shows.

The 56 contestants will open the first gala

Before the duels, the 56 contestants who advanced from the Blind Auditions will join together for the gala’s opening. They will perform “102 Seconds,” the season’s anthem composed by Pablo López.

The performance will serve as a unifying moment between the two major phases of the show: the first, focused on forming the teams; and the second, focused on deciding which artists have enough potential to advance. From that number on, the individual battles between members of each formation will begin.

The presence of López as the author of the theme adds a unique element to the gala, since the coach will be evaluating their own contestants after having participated in creating the song that defines the edition. The weight of the decision, however, will remain shared among the four teams and the new rescue mechanisms.

Schedule and key points of the new phase

The first Battle episode will air on Antena 3 this Friday, October 30 at 10:00 PM. The network has presented this phase as a turning point in the season, with Vanesa Martín integrated into the panel and a mechanism designed to broaden the chances of continuity.

  • Main coaches: Melendi, Lola Indigo, Mika and Pablo López.
  • Fifth coach: Vanesa Martín.
  • Duration of this phase: two episodes.
  • Rescues: one per team per episode, for a total of eight.
  • Contestants from the Blind Auditions: 56.
  • Contestants who will advance: 18.

According to Atresmedia’s official information, the arrival of the fifth coach and the red card are the main novelties of a phase that aims to raise tension without abandoning the recognizable elements of the format.

The key will be to see how much the balance between the teams actually shifts: the coaches will retain control of their decisions, but they will no longer be the only ones able to keep a contestant in the game. In this edition, a performance can end in a steal, an immediate protection, or a later rescue, and that uncertainty will be the new axis of The Voice during the Battles.
