HBO confirmed on October 27, 2026 three casting announcements for the Harry Potter series: Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, Hannah Chinn will portray Lily Potter, and Harry Gilby will take on the role of Charlie Weasley. All three will be part of the first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, whose premiere on HBO Max Spain is scheduled for December 25.
The casting covers two very different family branches. James and Lily are essential to understanding the protagonist’s childhood, even though their story unfolds before the start of Hogwarts. Charlie, by contrast, represents a different path for the adaptation: Ron’s brother exists in the novels, but had barely any presence in the films.
Who are the new actors joining Harry Potter
Jasper Talbot, who has appeared in Broadchurch, will play James Potter. Hannah Chinn will be Lily Potter and Harry Gilby, seen in The Last Kingdom, will take on the role of Charlie Weasley. The three actors’ identities are listed in HBO Max Spain’s announcement of October 27.
Harry’s parents, killed by Voldemort when he was a baby, appeared in the films through memories, photographs, and other magical manifestations. Adrian Rawlins played James and Geraldine Somerville played Lily. In the new series there will be more time to develop the characters, but HBO has not yet detailed the extent of their appearances.
With Charlie, something noteworthy happens: the films mention his existence and show him in a family photo, but they do not assign him a dramatic role comparable to what he has in the first book. That makes Gilby’s casting more revealing than simply adding a name to the cast.
Charlie Weasley opens the door to revisiting a dragon-centered storyline
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid secretly raises a dragon named Norbert. To ferry it out of Hogwarts, Harry and his friends turn to Charlie Weasley, who works with these creatures in Romania. That clandestine operation, spelled out in the novel, has consequences for the students and was streamlined in the 2001 film.
Including Charlie as a distinct character with his own actor helps recover that link between the Weasley family and the dragon episode. That does not mean the book’s scene will be reproduced literally: the production has not yet confirmed how Charlie will appear in the episodes. The distinction is already interesting for a show that will devote eight episodes to a single novel.
The Weasleys will come into their own alongside Alastair Stout as Ron, Tristan and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George, Ruari Spooner as Percy, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly. The initial Weasley siblings’ announcement even hinted that Charlie was in Romania and would join the cast later.
The Harry Potter series will arrive on HBO Max at Christmas
The new Harry will be Dominic McLaughlin, with Arabella Stanton cast as Hermione. John Lithgow will portray Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Francesca Gardiner will lead the writing, and Mark Mylod will direct several episodes, in a production that revisits the first year at Hogwarts.
The first season is set to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. The arrival of James, Lily, and especially Charlie marks a concrete departure from the films before the release: the new adaptation can devote room to characters and narrative connections that the cinematic version had to condense.
