Celeste Returns on November 19 as Season 2 Goes Back Three Years to Investigate a Football Star

October 25, 2026

Movistar Plus+ will premiere the Thursday, November 19, 2026 the second season of Celeste, the series created by Diego San José and starring Carmen Machi. Its six episodes are set three years before the first installment and follow Sara Santano in a tax investigation into an elite footballer.

The decision to go back in the chronology changes the meaning of the return: we won’t see Santano after her confrontation with the singer Celeste, but during the case that, according to the official synopsis, transformed her career and personal life. The character again faces someone much more famous than her, but this time the arena of the conflict is football.

The defendant is named Bautista «El Chivo» Figueroa, an Argentine striker for Madrid in the fiction. The plot revolves around a corporate structure with which he would have sought to hide almost €20 million in image rights. To trace that money, the inspector will enlist Valentín Valero, a colleague who is a fan of Atlético de Madrid and has his own reasons to confront the goal-scorer.

The details are fictional, not an accusation against a real player. Movistar Plus+ confirmed on October 22 both the premiere date and the time jump, and released the first teaser and the poster for this new batch of episodes.

From 184 days of a singer to the image rights of a footballer

The first season posed a very specific question: could the tax authorities prove that Mexican singer Celeste had resided in Spain long enough to owe taxes here? Santano’s investigation aimed to establish 184 days of stay and involved about 20 million euros, according to the official presentation of that story.

The new case retains a similar figure, but completely changes the problem the inspector must solve. It is no longer about locating an artist to reconstruct her tax residency, but about unraveling how a footballer commercially exploits his image through corporate structures. It is a narrative shift with substance: from counting days on a calendar to tracing the business path of revenue.

It also changes the relationship between the investigator and her target. Celeste was an international star capable of filling stadiums; Figueroa is a sports icon who mobilizes club loyalties. The Madrid-Atlético rivalry adds a dimension of fan support and loyalty to the file that the series can use to stretch its comedy about bureaucracy. This is the most interesting reading of the new approach, beyond simply repeating the formula of the celebrity under scrutiny.

When it premieres and who returns in the cast

Carmen Machi reprises the role of Sara Santano at the helm of a cast that includes Carlos Blanco, Pol López, Antonio Durán «Morris», Aixa Villagrán, Lucas Velasco, Cumelén Sanz and Carlos Lorenzo. Elena Trapé returns to direct the six episodes, written by Diego San José together with Oriol Puig and Fernando Delgado-Hierro, with the collaboration of Daniel Castro.

The new installment will have its premiere at the Serielizados Festival in Barcelona on October 26, before arriving on Movistar Plus+ on November 19. It thus joins the slate of Spanish fiction that the platform announced for the 2026-2027 season.

The first Celeste earned, among other recognitions, the Ondas Award and the Feroz Award for Best Comedy Series. Its continuation must sustain interest in the inspector without relying on the character who gave the original story its title: the through-line remains Santano, and now the series will recount what happened before that final major case arrived.
