‘The Batman: Part II’ has temporarily halted production while Matt Reeves attends to a family matter. The pause affects the filming of the sequel starring Robert Pattinson, but for now it is not accompanied by a new change in the schedule: the film remains slated for release on February 18, 2028.
The situation is especially noteworthy because this version of Batman’s second film has already faced a lengthy schedule. Warner Bros. had previously pushed the sequel to 2027 and, later, ‘The Batman: Part II’ was ultimately set for 2028. The new interruption adds another pause to the project, though the studio presents it as a temporary measure linked to the director’s personal situation.
A spokesperson for Warner Bros. and DC Studios told Variety that production has paused while Reeves attends to a family matter and that the filmmaker has the full support of DC Studios. The studio’s message also indicates that work will continue, without announcing replacements or any creative changes.
A Pause That Comes After Several Delays
The story of the sequel helps explain why any halt can be concerning. According to the timeline tracked by the U.S. publication, the film was originally planned for October 2026, then moved to October 1, 2027, and finally shifted to February 2028. The first ‘The Batman’ was released in March 2022, so the gap between the two installments will be nearly six years if the current date holds.
For now, however, there are no official signals that this pause will translate into another delay. Nor has a change of director been announced. Reeves remains attached as the creative lead of the film, which again places Pattinson in charge of a Gotham distinct from the main DC universe. That distinction remains relevant as DC prepares another version of Batman for its shared universe.
The announced cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright, in addition to Pattinson. Warner and DC continue keeping much of the plot under wraps, so discussion around the sequel remains more dependent on its production, its additions and its timetable than on concrete plot details.
The immediate question, therefore, is not when the movie will premiere, but when production can resume. The studio has not given a date for Reeves’s return. Until there is an update, the confirmed information remains limited but clear: production is temporarily halted, the director remains at the helm, and the February 2028 release date stays unchanged.
