Luke Grimes Wants to Reunite with Kelsey Asbille in Marshals; Monica Dutton’s Return Not Confirmed

October 6, 2026

The second season of Marshals: A Yellowstone Story keeps open one of the possibilities that fans of Taylor Sheridan’s universe find most intriguing: Monica Dutton’s return. Luke Grimes, the lead of the spin-off as Kayce Dutton, has admitted that he would like to share scenes again with Kelsey Asbille, though he cannot confirm that the series has plans to bring back her character.

The new batch of episodes arrives on SkyShowtime on Friday, October 9 with a season of 18 episodes. Monica died of cancer between the events of Yellowstone and the start of Marshals, but her absence remains a crucial element in Kayce’s story and in how the character faces his new life.

Luke Grimes Does Not Confirm Monica’s Return

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Luke Grimes explained that he would be happy to work again with Kelsey Asbille. The actor, however, also made clear that he does not know whether the actress has been contacted or whether Monica’s return is part of the show’s creative plans.

Grimes noted that Asbille may consider her tenure in this universe closed, and that such decisions carry a personal component. Her stance is not a confirmation, but it avoids completely shutting a door that viewers have been hoping would reopen for some time.

The most logical option, should it occur, would be a flashback or an appearance tied to Kayce’s memories. Monica cannot return in the current timeline of the series without altering an event that already forms part of the character’s biography, but Marshals has built much of its conflict around the consequences of that loss.

Why Monica Remains Important Even Though She Has Died

Monica’s death does not simply function as a past fact. It is the emotional starting point of Kayce’s transformation, with him appearing in Marshals as he tries to rebuild his life while facing the family and professional responsibilities that have followed his wife’s disappearance.

Therefore, Monica’s appearance would need to fulfill a specific narrative function. It wouldn’t be enough to bring back Kelsey Asbille to provoke nostalgia: her scenes should expand the couple’s relationship, reveal a moment Kayce hasn’t shared, or show how they lived through the period between Yellowstone and the spin-off.

The series could also use her as a subjective presence, tied to memories, dreams, or the protagonist’s guilt. That approach would keep continuity intact while giving Kayce a deeper, more complex dimension than a character who simply tries to move past a grief already explained.

Marshals Remains Connected to Yellowstone

The possibility of bringing Monica back arrives in a season that has already confirmed another significant return. Jefferson White will reprise Jimmy Hurdstrom, the character who left Montana to move to Texas during the original series.

The inclusion of Jimmy shows that Marshals does not intend to sever all ties with Yellowstone. The series can develop its own identity around Kayce, but it continues to use familiar characters and conflicts to reinforce its link to the main fiction.

Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater also remain connected to the project. The presence of these figures places the new season at a midpoint: not a direct continuation of Yellowstone, but not a completely standalone story either.

The Challenge of Bringing Back Characters Without Turning the Spin-Off into a Sequel

That is one of Marshals’ most delicate decisions. The series needs Kayce’s past to matter because his grief explains much of his decisions, but it must also avoid that every episode hinges on a surprise visit from the original Yellowstone universe.

Monica’s death was conceived precisely as a way to mark distance from Yellowstone and allow the spin-off to find its own tone. Bringing her back through flashbacks could be a way to leverage the emotional bond without returning the show to the mother-series structure.

The difference would lie in who controls these appearances. If Monica returns only to remind the audience that she belongs to Yellowstone, the device would have primarily promotional value. If she appears to provide information about Kayce, Tate, or the period before Marshals, the return could have real consequences for the story.

The Second Season Also Brings Back Jimmy

Jimmy’s return will fit in differently. Unlike Monica, his character is still alive and can participate directly in the present action. His comeback broadens the franchise’s map of relationships and revisits one of the storylines tied to ranches, rodeos, and the character’s personal evolution.

Jefferson White’s appearance is also significant because it comes after the 6666 project did not move forward. Instead of transferring Jimmy to his own series, the character reappears within Marshals, which could help preserve part of that storyline without making it the spin-off’s main focus.

As for Monica, the situation is far less concrete. There is no confirmation that Kelsey Asbille will appear in season two, and Luke Grimes has not announced any firm plans. For now, the only clear thing is that the actor would be willing to reunite with his fellow cast member and that the story still offers a narrative path to do so.

The mystery, therefore, is not only whether Monica Dutton will return, but what her presence would mean for Kayce. While Jimmy can join the show’s present, Monica would have to return from memory. That difference will determine whether a potential cameo is perceived as a nod to Yellowstone fans or as a piece with real weight in Marshals’ evolution.
