Maxi Iglesias has returned this Monday to ‘El Hormiguero’, and his appearance carries a second reading that goes far beyond the promotion of Nuda propiedad. Just five months ago, during an interview with David Broncano on La Revuelta, the actor stated that he had been «cancelled on other programs» after his involvement with the format.
On September 28, Iglesias sat down with Susana Abaitua opposite Pablo Motos to present the film that they are releasing on October 2. Their visit opened the week’s guest lineup for ‘El Hormiguero’, in an interview where they talked about their new film or recalled their peculiar surfing competition.
The interesting part is the context. On April 21, Iglesias appeared on La Revuelta to talk about Punto Nemo and ended up recalling his former ties with Broncano’s team, with whom he had collaborated during the La Resistencia era.
What Maxi Iglesias Really Said on ‘La Revuelta’
Iglesias explained then that that more comedic facet had opened some professional doors for him, but also hinted that it had consequences on television.
When Broncano asked him about other spaces, the actor replied: «They canceled me from other programs». He also asserted that they treated him “as if he did not exist” and, despite that, he made clear that he would repeat his experience with Broncano’s team.
The statement is captured in RTVE’s own chronicle of that interview on La Revuelta, which also explains the actor’s prior relationship with the format.
Maxi Iglesias did not pronounce the name of ‘El Hormiguero’ nor publicly identify which programs had stopped counting on him. However, it was evident that the reference was to Pablo Motos’ program, which led various media outlets and viewers to infer that there might be an allusion to Motos’ space, especially because of the competition between the two formats, but the actor never confirmed that conclusion.
That is why his presence now on Antena 3 is significant and, at the very least, interesting.
From Broncano’s Sofa to Pablo Motos’ Sofa
The image does reveal a small paradox five months later. Iglesias returns to one of the main promotional showcases of Spanish television precisely after having spoken on the rival program about the doors that had closed on him in other spaces.
El Hormiguero and La Revuelta go head-to-head again this season in nearly the same time slot. That makes guest movements between the two programs more visible than they would be in two formats without direct competition.
In Iglesias’ case, moreover, the connection with Broncano is much older than this battle for access to prime time. He was a collaborator on La Resistencia and on El Hormiguero, and he has returned on several occasions to the presenter’s universe, where he has always appeared comfortable with a looser register than in many of his promotional appearances.
His appearance this Monday on El Hormiguero, with a fairly telling image: five months later, Maxi Iglesias returns to sit on one of the great entertainment programs to which that confession had caused people to glance warily.
